讲座题目：the hidden health gains from ai: robot adoptions and chronic diseases in china

摘要：chronic diseases account for nearly 75% deaths worldwide and disproportionately threaten developing economies. this paper theoretically and empirically unpacks the impact of industrial robot penetration on chronic diseases prevalence in china. we first develop a model to illustrate the impact of robot adoptions on workers' health and disentangle the labor market and other mechanisms at play. motivated by theoretical predictions, our empirical analysis exploits variations in robot exposures across chinese cities and individual health outcomes from the china health and nutrition survey (chns) from 2006 to 2015 and examines the causal effect of robots on health. our 2sls estimates show that a 1 unit increase in robots per 10,000 workers would result in a 0.68% reduction in the probability of having chronic diseases. higher labor productivity induced by capital-skill complementarity, better physical and mental health, and rising life quality are the three key channels at work. further welfare analysis quantitatively shows that 1 more rmb spent on robot investments would create extra 0.4 rmb health benefits. by documenting the hidden health gains from robots, this paper alleviates the fears of robot’s displacement effects and provides valuable implications for emerging economies.
