讲座题目：employment protection and firm performance

摘要：the theoretical effects of employment protection on firm performance are ambiguous. employment protection may positively influence firm performance by increasing job security, and investing more in r&d or buying new technologies in order to restore productivity. however, firms’ increasing costs after introduction of employment protection may bring additional financial constraints and lead to adverse effects. social insurance law(sil)of the prc in 2011 is an employment protection policy, protecting workers’ legal right and interest in enjoying social insurance benefits. in this paper, we exploit the adoption of the legislation to study the effect of employment protection on firm performance using micro data from listed companies spanning the pre- and post-sil introduction. we empirically find that these mechanism effects of opposing directions are at work and the 2011 sil legislation has a positive net effect on firm performance, impacting the aggregate productivity of the workforce and output of the economy. heterogeneous effects are consistent with our economic intuition.

赵岭晓，西南财经大学财税学院副教授，于2015年毕业于美国俄克拉荷马大学，研究领域为劳动经济学，公共财政和房地产经济学。其在journal of labor economics、journal of real estate finance and economics等期刊发表论文。
