abstract:in this paper, we build on relational stakeholder theory and the pyramid of csr to argue that stakeholders evaluate a firm’s financial position and entire set of csr strategies to determine their responses. specifically, we propose that for declining firms, stakeholders are less likely to penalize their layoff activities or reward their philanthropic contributions. moreover, stakeholders are more likely to respond negatively when declining firms undertake layoffs and philanthropy simultaneously, and such negative responses are stronger when the firm’s philanthropic donation or executive compensation is above the industry average. an analysis of all listed chinese declining firms from 2009 to 2019 supports our arguments. in sum, our study shows that the pyramid order of responsibilities is critical to the discussion of stakeholder responses and the csr—firm performance relationship and that layoff is not a panacea for declining firms.

陈仕莉,荷兰格罗宁根大学博士,现任西交利物浦大学助理教授,研究领域为公司治理与企业社会责任。她的论文曾发表于国际一流期刊journal of business ethics和获得美国及欧洲管理学会年会最佳跨国研究奖。
