immigration and fiscal impact: professor liu xiangbo's collaborative paper published in review of economic dynamics

september 19, 2024

recently, professor liu xiangbo's co-authored paper, "immigration, legal status and fiscal impact," was officially published in volume 54 of the review of economic dynamics (2024). the review of economic dynamics is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal published by elsevier on behalf of the society for economic dynamics, recognized internationally as a top-tier journal in the field of macroeconomics.

the impact of immigration on the labor market has been widely studied. however, research focusing on the macroeconomic effects of immigration, particularly its influence on consumption and fiscal revenue, remains relatively scarce. this paper constructs a dynamic general equilibrium model with labor market frictions and heterogeneous agents to examine the effects of immigration on employment, output, consumption, taxation, and social welfare in host countries. in addition to qualitative analysis, the paper provides quantitative assessments of immigration's impact and conducts several policy simulation experiments.

the paper's findings have significant implications for china's goal of integrating urban and rural development, a necessary requirement for chinese-style modernization. eliminating institutional barriers to urban-rural integration ultimately hinges on promoting the free flow of production factors between urban and rural areas. the study offers valuable insights for evaluating the macroeconomic effects of labor force mobility between urban and rural regions and for establishing a unified national market in china.
